Top Tips for Writing a Successful CV

Your CV is the all important ticket that can secure you an interview. Our top tips below will help make your CV stand out.

1. Get the Basics Right
There are many different ways a CV can be formatted, but there are some common sections that you should include in your CV. These include: personal and contact information, education and qualifications, work history and experience, relevant skills to the job you are applying for and some references. If you are unsure how to get started take a look at some of the free websites that will help you create a CV.

2. Presentation
Make it easy for people to read your CV, if it is hard to read it could end up in the bin! Use a clear font at a suitable size. If you are sending your CV electronically preview it to see how it will look when printed out.

3. Proof Read
Proof read it thoroughly before sending, if it contains spelling and grammar mistakes - what does that say about you to a potential employer?

4. Stick to Two Pages of A4
Recruiters have lots of CVs to read, they don't have time to read endless waffle. Make sure your CV is clear and concise. Your CV should be no longer than two pages of A4.

5. Tailor Your CV to the Job Description
Read the job description carefully and tailor your CV to the attributes the recruiter is looking for. If you are lacking in some areas, try to adapt the skills or experiences you have had. Use a tailored CV to show the recruiter you have the specific skills and experience they are looking for.

6. Make the Most of your Experience
Spend some time thinking about the experience and skills you have and how this relates to the job that you are applying for. Use positive language such as 'developed', 'achieved', 'organised' and 'managed'.

7. Highlight your Skills
This is your chance to show the employer the key skills you have that make you stand out from the other candidates. As well as any qualifications you can include softer skills like 'team work' and 'communication skills'. Use examples to reinforce what you are saying, these could be examples from work, work experience or hobbies.

8. Make you Interests Interesting
Your interests should show the employer that you are proactive outside of work. It is a good opportunity to reinforce your skills. Include anything that shows that you are diverse, interesting and skilled. Avoid passive and solitary activities like watching TV.

9. References
You should include two references of people that have employed you in the past and can vouch for your skills and experience. If you do not have two people you can include teachers or tutors. It is always courteous to let people know that you have listed them as a reference on your CV.

10. Regularly Update your CV
It is important that your CV is up to date. Make sure you regularly check your CV and add any new experience and skills. If your CV feels a little lacking in content, think about experience and skills you could develop that would enable you to enhance it.
